THE GREAT MIDDLEMARCH MYSTERY
A whodunnit for the ages, tangled in red string and Victorian secrets.
We were commissioned by Dash Arts to create the key art for The Great Middlemarch Mystery, a site-specific theatrical experience reimagining George Eliot’s novel on the streets of modern-day Coventry. Part literary adaptation, part interactive mystery, part time-travelling fever dream, the show invites audiences to step into the world of Middlemarch and help bring its secrets to light.
The brief called for something that felt smart, layered and a little conspiratorial. It needed to honour Eliot’s 19th-century roots while leaning into the production’s playful, contemporary style.
We designed a silhouetted ‘murder board’ filled with photos, post-it notes, maps and string, shaped into the outline of a Victorian figure. The final image nods to detective stories, historical intrigue and DIY detective work, inviting audiences to start connecting the dots.
